Derived from the French word meaning “to mix,” melange is a term often used in textiles to describe the blending of different colored fibers or yarns. Whether mixed at the raw fiber stage or during spinning, melange yarns create fabrics that appear solid from afar, but reveal a rich, subtle interplay of tones when seen up close. In Japan, this nuanced texture is often referred to as “shimo-furi” or “moku”—expressions that evoke delicate irregularities and layered tones unique to natural materials.
For the Autumn/Winter 2025 season, CONFECT focuses on the expressive power of melange. From selecting yarns spun with pre-dyed fibers to developing new twisted yarns from different colors, we’ve concentrated on the stages before fabric is even woven—pursuing a deeper expression of both color and texture. Leading this initiative are two styles crafted from a newly developed wool-linen melange stripe fabric.

Wool Linen Mélange Stripe
This textile is woven by combining wool yarns in varying tonal depths with charcoal-hued linen yarns. The different shrinkage rates of wool and linen, along with the twist direction and weave structure, help control the emergence of natural fuzz. The result is a fabric with a light, dry touch, gently distorted stripe lines, and a beautifully uneven texture that reflects the true character of natural fibers.
