WET-SPUN LINEN

「水」に浸しながら、糸を「撚る」。
"Wet-Spinning After Soaking in Water"

Fabric carries with it the accumulation of countless innovations and a vast history. Even a seemingly simple piece of cloth contains layers of detail: the material, raw fiber, yarn, the way threads are twisted together, the weaving of warp and weft, the tension of the threads, and the finishing of the fabric. The texture and character that emerge from these endless combinations are truly unique.

Among the countless fabrics that exist, few things are as gratifying as encountering one that truly moves you. The "water-spun linen and Japanese paper fabric" that CONFECT discovered for this spring/summer season is one such example.

By spinning linen yarn while it is soaked in water, the fibers absorb moisture and the fluff is subdued. This allows for a tighter twist to be applied to the yarn. The more times the yarn is twisted, the finer and smoother it becomes. Then, by weaving the yarn without too much tension—leaving it slightly relaxed—the surface of the fabric naturally forms random undulations. These irregularities give the fabric its distinctive texture, unique to water-spun linen.

The term "wet-spun linen" is not a commonly heard one—and for good reason. It requires specialized equipment, and only a limited number of spinning mills in Japan are capable of producing it. Because of this, production volume is deliberately limited each year to protect and sustain the technique, ensuring its preservation for the future.
