The concept for this product began with an encounter with artisans of Arimatsu Shibori, a traditional dyeing technique cultivated in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture. It is a creation born from the fusion of accumulated experience and the refined touch of skilled hands. Each tie-dyed garment is hand-dyed by skilled artisans, making every pattern truly one of a kind. We invite you to enjoy a unique piece of clothing that exists nowhere else in the world.

Japanese Tie-Dye technique

Arimatsu Shibori is a dyeing technique that has flourished since Japan’s Edo period and is considered one of the country’s three major shibori traditions. The process involves tightly binding flat fabric with string before dyeing it, resulting in irregular and varied dye patterns that differ depending on how tightly the fabric is bound and where the binding is applied.

Arimatsu Shibori is a dyeing technique mainly used for items such as hand towels, kimono, and yukata. In these cases, it is common to apply the dyeing process to the fabric while it is still in its raw, unfinished state. However, when using such pre-dyed fabric to create garments, fabric offcuts are inevitably generated—something that goes against our philosophy.

To address this, we adopted a garment-dyeing approach for this project. We also designed the pieces to minimize overlapping fabric as much as possible. By combining this with the artisans’ spirit of innovation and craftsmanship, we were able to create truly rare and exceptional items.

This shirt was designed to minimize areas where the fabric overlaps, allowing you to fully appreciate the beautiful variations in shibori dyeing. The absence of layered sections helps enhance the contrast and character unique to each piece.

The line-like dye pattern that appears near the hem is created by submerging just the bottom of the pants into a bucket filled with dye. This method results in a distinctive gradient effect unique to each garment.
